About this webinar

This seminar will cover the theory as well as the practical aspects of residential rentals. In relation to the lease agreement, the purpose of the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 is to protect the consumer (or the Tenant) against any unfair marketing and business practices, which may be used by the supplier (or the Landlord). Section 14 of the CPA bears the most relevance to residential lease agreements. Solutions in this regard will be discussed taking into consideration rental collection and alternative dispute resolution.

Backgroun to this presentation
The seminar will focus on all the legal aspects of rental property in general, with emphasis on evictions in terms of the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act 19 of 1998 (PIE Act).

Claire Laurent (Legal Manager) 

Claire obtained her LLB Degree from the University of Pretoria in 2014. She joined SSLR Inc in January 2015 as a candidate attorney. Claire was admitted as an Attorney of the High Court of South Africa in 2017 and continued to hone her skills and experience as a formidable litigation Attorney, attending regularly to appearances of both opposed and unopposed motion hearings in the High Court and the Magistrates Court alike.

Claire’s expertise lies in eviction procedure in terms of the PIE Act, and more broadly, in terms of most other statutes relevant to property rights, including Consumer Protection law as it relates to letting of property, laws applicable to residential letting of property in terms of the Rental Housing Act 50 of 199 and the regulations thereto, and laws relevant to the rights and duties of Property Practitioners. Her substantive knowledge of court procedure and practice coupled with her expertise in property law and evictions gives assurance that the rights of property owners are realised expeditiously and professionally.
